"The director is the master artist, responsible for every aspect of the production. The primary job of the director is the unification of the team of artists working for him or her. I felt that this production had a clear vision, that the director had unified his team of designers, actors, technicians and musicians behind him, and pushed them forward into the creation of a beautiful work of performance art. I applaud thee, O Director. Good job!
The dances were individuated for character characteristics when necessary, but also blended the characters together nicely for ensemble pieces. The tap dance number and the traditional chorus kick-line were also nice touches. The design of the choreography was top-notch, as was its execution by the cast, both as individuals and as ensemble members. This was a great piece of movement musical theatre. A personal favorite remains Barfee’s individual style of high kick, and Haythem Smith’s command of wheelie shoe movement. Director Rion doubles well as a choreographer. Nice stuff."
Community Service Award: To recognize and commend a production that fulfills a distinct community service function to an off campus population.
In today’s society, especially the closed system of a school society, we need to pay special attention to individuality and the protection of the rights of those who belong to that society. One of our inalienable rights is the pursuit of happiness, and an impediment to the pursuit of happiness is the phenomenon known as “bullying.” While bullying takes place at all levels of society, it is especially prevalent in schools, and often the victims of bullying are people who resemble the characters in this play. I believe that through the loving and noble portrayal of these characters, the students and faculty of Gulf Coast State College have done a community service and should be commended for making their local society a better place through their art.
